Winners of the 84th Annual National One-Act Playwriting Competition
June 15, 2025, Ottawa, ON – The Ottawa Little Theatre’s 84thAnnual National One-Act Playwriting Competition received 68entries from across the country. The winners join a long list of Canadian literary luminaries including Robertson Davies, John Murrell, Erika Ritter, Catherine Banks and Ken Mitchell.
Second prize, Dorothy White Award: Somebody Anybody by Rosaleen Egan (Alliston, ON)
Adjudicator’s comments for Somebody Anybody:
• “…very well written, believable, and provocative, as it explored the importance of not dehumanizing the homeless through the lens of good investigative and compassionate journalism. Two important themes intertwined to illustrate and promote that ideal, by pushing a journalist to explore and tell the story of one homeless man. An ambitious goal, beautifully achieved.”
• “…Interesting dialogue and clever staging potential.”

Playwriting
I enjoy telling stories; some are real, some imaginary, and some a combination of the two. My play writing is often sparked by real events and situations. Among the many ways of telling a story, playwriting stands out as a wonderful opportunity to co-create an experience not only with actors, directors and stage crew, but with an audience.
I am a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada, and five of my plays are available through the Canadian Play Outlet.

Breathe
Gus draws on his deep-breathing therapy when a body is discovered in the hallway and the police knock on his door. This comedic, 10-minute, murder mystery asks the question: Who-dun-what?

As the Wind Blows
This moving period piece is set in Collingwood, Ontario a year after the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. The losses and devastation force change on the lives of three women.
As the Wind Blows was supported by Paul Carroll and the Great Lakes Storm of 1913 Centenary Remembrance Core Planning Committee in Goderich, ON.and featured in South Simcoe Theatre's Four Play: A showcase of play readings, 2016. -

Buying Time is a 10 minute drama involving two women. A young mother shops at the local small town store and finds out that her business is everyone’s business. What does she have to hide?

A twenty minute humorous story involving mysterious occurrences, a granny, and her family who think she has lost her faculties.

Somebody/Anybody
Jimmy Clarkson, a disillusioned reporter, is pushed by his new editor to delve deeper into the story of the death of an unhoused man set against the backdrop of the 2010 recession and a shifting newspaper industry. His investigation forces him to confront his own biases and assumptions.
Inspired by a real incident, Somebody/Anybody touches on the realities of the unhoused and speaks to the inherent dignity of the human person.
